openSim 2019 – Industry 4.0

We took a bit of a breather last year, but in 2019 openSim is back! It will be our 5th symposium since starting at the University of Pretoria in 2014. We are returning to the CSIR in Pretoria this year, the same venue we used for our 2015 symposium.

Symposium Theme

Industry 4.0 – What part can free and open-source software play?

There is currently a lot of hype and noise about the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Industry 4.0, digitalisation, IoT, and a plethora of other buzz words. Is that all they are… buzz words? Are these things really new, or have we been doing many of them for a while? I believe the free and open-source software (FOSS) community has been moving in this direction for a long time. Now we have new names, fresh interest, renewed momentum… and perhaps new and bigger opportunities.

Date and time

25 October 2019, 08:00 to 16:30

We are looking forward to exploring, discovering, and learning together as part of our drive to empower teams in our industry. In the past, we hosted Thermo Week, during which we focused on thermochemistry. Pyro Week has a broader scope, to address more of the needs that we have identified in our pyrometallurgy community.
